I have recently been working with plaster gauze in my studio to create both molds and casts of my paper and tape sculptures. It is both strong and versatile and easily integrates with wood, wire and even felt elements.
For these new cast creatures I wanted tie together two different past project by using botanical cyanotype prints in their skin. I used pressed specimens and new vinyl cut negatives to get a wide array of forms.
The most exciting part about this work is that I am using a fun new material that was just sitting around in my studio: glow-in-the-dark cord and thread. The second image above was shot as a 30 second exposure. The horns and stitches charge during the day and will glow up to 6 hours into the night.
