Some series for me start with the act of painting rather than coming up with a conceptual theme. They serve as a kind of ‘in between’. I don’t consider them less important or less skilled but they reveal themselves further into the process.
One such group of paintings are portraits of people vaping. I found the subject for the 1st painting while researching something else on the internet. The image was interesting to me. A portrait that doesn’t reveal the sitter’s identity but can be placed in our contemporary times. They are done in watercolor and I enjoy pushing the levels of abstraction while visually interpreting the vapor.
