Collateral Damage III Newark Arts Festival 2019 33 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102 October 8 – November 5, 2019
Collateral Damage is part of my ongoing series “Perilous Journeys,” which references the crossing of borders by immigrants, migrants and refugees.
Collateral Damage III is my latest sight-specific installation commenting on the caging of children in detention centers in the United States. The cage-like sculpture in the center of the gallery had a faux concrete base and an abandoned child’s jacket. Surrounding the sculpture were dozens of foil blankets mimicking those given to children sleeping on concrete floors. Tucked into the folds of each “blanket” was a physical object that once belonged to a child: a sock, a shoe, an article of clothing or a lost toy.
At the entrance of the exhibition guest were invited to take a flashlight to help locate the children’s objects among the blankets.
All of these artifacts serve as a form of evidence and were donated by parents, children, grandparents, who find it painful to even conceive of children living in cages.
The number of children being held, the location of their parents and the physical, emotional and intellectual futures of these children is currently in limbo. The flood lights are always on in these detention centers; regrettably they can’t illuminate the future releases of these children.
Like all of my work Collateral Damage is designed to invite conversations on difficult but critical global issues.
Collateral Damage IV,
is my latest installation which will be featured in the juried show on the 8th floor at Art Fair 14C February 21-23, 2020
