Culture Exists When…

Culture exists when a set of values comes to be acknowledged as sound and sacred by a group of people. The group is able to hold the meaning of those values with confidence and share different iterations with one another. Identifying with American Society called for the rejection of one’s blackness, the suppression of their experience, and the erasure of their history. From the day of its conception America has made blacks fight for all of their rights, while excluding their political and economic presence. Education is said to be the great social equalizer and access to free and high quality schools can help level the playing field for disadvantaged children. However they did not account for the black dilemma. Questions like? Who are these children? Where does their identity lie? Will their needs be met by isolating themselves within their own community? Or by struggling to gain full equality side by side as an American citizen? Public Enemy was born out of this evaluation. It is informed by the experiences of these individuals as well as my own experience as a Haitian American child being raised in America seeking to know it’s true history. Thus the challenge is not only finding the proper representation for these diverse individuals, but channeling those past experiences so I can continue to explore the different ways to monumentalize their representation. I was inspired by the mediums that sought the most direct communication while having the ability to create authentic connections between friends, teachers, family, and strangers. All while moving with the understanding that we need to have compassion for an experience that we cannot fully grasp if we are truly seeking understanding.
